Privacy Policy
The short version: the calculator never sends your numbers anywhere. Units, sanctioned load, meter readings and the resulting bill are computed entirely inside your browser. We only receive data when you deliberately upload a bill, create an account, or send us an email — and this page says exactly what happens in each case.

Who we are
TheDiscomBill is an independent electricity-bill calculator for Indian consumers, operated from India. It is not affiliated with any DISCOM, State Electricity Regulatory Commission or government body. For anything on this page, including a request to delete your data, write to thediscombill@gmail.com.
Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 we act as the Data Fiduciary for the personal data described below, and you are the Data Principal.
What never leaves your device
This is the largest part of the site, so it is worth stating first and plainly:
- Every calculator input. Units, sanctioned load, billing dates, meter readings, solar export, arrears, consumer name and address if you type them into the bill preview — all of it is processed by JavaScript in your browser. None of it is transmitted to us, and we could not read it if we wanted to.
- Saved bills and preferences. Anything you save for later lives in your browser's own storage on your device. Clearing your browser data deletes it permanently, and we hold no copy.
- PDF bills you open locally. When a PDF already contains a text layer we read it in the browser and nothing is uploaded.
Bill upload and OCR
If you use Check My Bill to read a photo or scanned bill, the image has to be processed by an optical-character-recognition engine. There are two paths, and you choose which one runs:
- Cloud OCR (accurate, needs your consent). The image is sent through our server to OCR.space, a third-party OCR service, which returns the text. Nothing is uploaded until you explicitly consent — you are asked before the first upload, and you can decline. We do not retain the image after the text is returned.
- On-device OCR (private, less accurate). If you decline, the image is read by Tesseract running inside your own browser. Nothing is transmitted at all.
An electricity bill usually shows your name, address, account number and consumption history. Please redact anything you would rather not share before uploading — the calculator only needs the units, load, category and charges to check the arithmetic.
Accounts and expert bill review
You only need an account for expert bill review; the calculator and the OCR self-check work signed out. Accounts and uploaded documents are stored on Supabase (Mumbai region). When you open a review case we hold:
- Your email address, and your name and phone number if you provide them
- The bill documents you upload, in private storage
- The messages exchanged with the reviewer handling your case
Case documents are visible only to you, the reviewer assigned to your case, and site administrators. Reviewers accept a written confidentiality undertaking before they can open any case. We do not sell, rent or share your documents with anyone else, and we never use them for advertising.
You can ask us to delete your account and every associated document at any time by emailing thediscombill@gmail.com.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages and tools get used — page views, approximate location at city level, device type, and events such as "a bill was calculated" or "an upload was started". These are aggregate usage signals. We never send your bill figures, uploaded images, or anything you typed into the calculator to analytics.
Google Analytics sets cookies. You can block them with your browser's settings, an extension, or your device's "Do Not Track" preference — the site works normally without them. We do not run advertising, and we do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
Third parties we rely on
| Service | What it handles | When |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Accounts, review cases, uploaded documents | Only if you create an account |
| OCR.space | Reading text from a bill image | Only if you consent to cloud OCR |
| Google Analytics 4 | Aggregate usage statistics | Every page, unless you block it |
| GitHub Pages | Serving the website | Every page (standard server logs) |
Fonts are self-hosted on our own domain, so loading a page does not tell any font provider that you visited.
How long we keep things
- Calculator data — never held by us at all.
- Bill images sent to cloud OCR — processed and discarded; not stored by us.
- Review cases and documents — kept while your account is open, and deleted when you ask us to delete it.
- Emails you send us — kept as long as needed to deal with the matter.
- Analytics — retained per Google Analytics' own retention settings.
Your rights under the DPDP Act
For the personal data we actually hold, you have the right to:
- Access a summary of your data and how it is processed
- Correct or complete anything inaccurate
- Erase your data where we no longer need it for the stated purpose
- Withdraw consent you previously gave — as easily as you gave it
- Nominate someone to exercise these rights if you die or become incapacitated
- Complain to the Data Protection Board of India if we fail to resolve your grievance
Email thediscombill@gmail.com and we will respond within a reasonable period. There is no charge.
Children
This site is not directed at children and we do not knowingly process the personal data of anyone under 18. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, tell us and we will delete it.
Security, and what we cannot promise
The site is served over HTTPS, uploaded documents sit in private storage behind row-level access rules, and access to review cases is logged. That said, no internet service can promise perfect security, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. The strongest protection available to you is the one we have already recommended: redact what you do not need to share, and remember that the calculator itself never needs your identity at all.
Changes to this policy
If we change how data is handled, we will update this page and move the "last updated" date above. Material changes affecting data you have already given us will be notified by email where we hold one.
This policy describes our actual practice and is written to be read rather than to be impressive. It is not legal advice. If something here is unclear or looks wrong, please tell us at thediscombill@gmail.com — we would rather fix it than defend it.
