How a prepaid recharge works
The mechanics are much the same at every DISCOM — what differs is the portal and the low-balance rules. Pick yours below for the same steps written against its own portal.
- Find your consumer or meter numberIt is on the meter display, or at the top of your last bill.
- Use an official channelThe DISCOM’s own portal or app, or a BBPS-enabled UPI app.
- Pay, then check the balanceIt usually appears on the meter within minutes.
- Keep a bufferRecharge before it reaches zero — disconnection rules vary by DISCOM.

Frequently asked questions
How does a smart meter recharge work?
Enter your consumer/meter number on your DISCOM's official portal/app or a BBPS-enabled UPI app (PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm), pick an amount and pay. The balance usually updates within minutes. Pick your DISCOM above — each page gives the exact channel.
Is power cut immediately when a prepaid smart meter balance runs out?
Supply can be disconnected automatically on a negative balance, but most DISCOMs do not disconnect at night, on Sundays or holidays. Once you recharge, supply is normally restored automatically.
Does a smart meter bill more than a normal meter?
No — the rates stay exactly as per the tariff order. The real reasons readings jump (an old meter under-reading, arrears adjustment and more) are covered in our guide.
