How the PM Surya Ghar subsidy is calculated
The central subsidy is fixed by system size, not by your income or bill: ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW — so a 1 kW system gets ₹30,000, 2 kW gets ₹60,000, and anything 3 kW or larger is capped at ₹78,000. Many states add their own top-up on top of this central amount. You register on the national portal, pick an empanelled vendor, and the subsidy is credited to your bank account after the system is installed and the net meter is commissioned.
What size do you actually need?
As a rule of thumb, 1 kW covers about 120 units a month and needs roughly 100 sq ft of shadow-free roof, generating around 4 units a day. Sizing the system to your own consumption is what makes solar pay — oversizing past what you use (and past the 3 kW subsidy cap) just lengthens the payback.
