On-Grid vs Hybrid Solar: Which One Your House Actually Needs
Most people buy rooftop solar expecting two things: a smaller bill, and lights that stay on when the area goes dark. A standard on-grid system delivers the first and not the second — during a power cut it shuts down completely, even at noon in full sun. That surprise is the single biggest reason buyers end up unhappy with an otherwise well-installed system. Here is what actually separates on-grid from hybrid, what the difference costs, and how to tell which one your house needs.

It is not a fault, and it is not your inverter being cheap. A grid-tied inverter is required to disconnect the moment the grid goes down. The behaviour is called anti-islanding, and it exists for a hard safety reason: if your panels kept pushing power into the local network during an outage, they would energise lines that a lineman has switched off and believes are dead.
There is a second, more practical reason. A plain grid-tied inverter is grid-following — it uses the grid's own voltage and frequency as the reference it synchronises to. Remove the grid and it has nothing to follow. It cannot simply carry on running your house, because nothing is left to tell it what "230 V, 50 Hz" looks like.
So an on-grid system is best understood as a bill-reduction machine, not a backup machine. On a normal day it is excellent at the first job. During an outage it contributes nothing at all.

For a house that already has a DISCOM connection, off-grid is almost never the right answer. You would be paying for a large battery bank to replace a grid you are connected to anyway, and giving up export credit to do it. The real decision is on-grid versus hybrid.
What the battery actually buys you
This is where the maths gets misread. A battery does not generate anything. It shifts units you already generated from the afternoon to the evening, and it keeps a few circuits alive when the grid drops. Both are real benefits. Neither is usually a large financial return.
Under net metering, an exported unit is already credited against an imported one, and because netting removes your most expensive units first, that credit is worth your top slab rate — see how net metering savings actually work. Storing a unit instead of exporting it therefore does not create new value; at best it captures roughly the same value, minus round-trip losses, minus the battery's share of its own cost. The gap that a battery genuinely closes is where your state pays a low rate for exports rather than netting them one-for-one.
The other cost people miss is replacement timing. Panels are typically warranted for decades; batteries are not. Assume the storage will need replacing at least once inside the life of the panels, and put that replacement into your sums at the start rather than discovering it later.
The honest framing: buy a battery to buy availability, not savings. If your area rarely loses power, the money usually does more work as extra panel capacity than as storage.
Where the subsidy sits
Under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the central subsidy for residential consumers is set per kilowatt of rooftop capacity:
- ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW
- ₹18,000 per kW for additional capacity up to 3 kW
- ₹78,000 total cap for anything larger than 3 kW
- Special-category states get an additional 10% per kW
The portal also publishes indicative sizing: 1–2 kW for a household averaging up to 150 units a month, 2–3 kW for 150–300 units, and above 3 kW beyond that. The scheme is open to residential consumers and resident welfare associations only, and is currently scheduled to close on 31 March 2027. The point that matters for this decision: the subsidy is calculated on generating capacity in kW. It is not a contribution towards storage. A battery is an out-of-pocket addition on top of a subsidised system, so the subsidy improves the economics of the panels and leaves the hybrid premium untouched.
Hybrid systems do qualify. The scheme's operational guidelines settle this directly: systems that are connected to the grid but not feeding into it — the guidelines name battery hybrid systems explicitly — are eligible for the subsidy, subject to approval by your state's Electricity Regulatory Commission. That last clause is the one to check locally, because approval is a state matter rather than a central one. What is not open to interpretation is how much you get: the guidelines state that the subsidy is calculated on the capacity of the solar modules installed, so adding storage never increases it. How to decide
Answer these in order. The first two settle most cases.
- How often does your supply actually fail, and for how long? Not your impression — check a few months of experience honestly. Occasional short cuts do not justify storage. Daily or multi-hour outages do.
- What must stay running? There is a large difference between keeping lights, fans, the router and a fridge alive, and running air conditioning through an outage. The first is a modest battery. The second is a different budget entirely.
- What do you use today for backup? If you already run an inverter and battery, a hybrid system can often replace that whole arrangement rather than sit alongside it — which changes the comparison, because part of the hybrid cost is replacing something you were going to renew anyway.
- Is your roof or budget the binding constraint? If either limits you, spend on panel capacity first. Generation you do not have cannot be stored.
A reasonable default for most urban homes on a stable supply: on-grid, sized to your consumption. A reasonable default where outages are routine: hybrid, with the battery sized to a defined backup circuit rather than to the whole house.
What to ask before you sign
- Which loads exactly will run during an outage, and for how long on a full battery?
- Is the inverter hybrid-capable now, or would adding storage later mean replacing it? A plain grid-tied inverter usually cannot simply take a battery afterwards.
- What is the expected replacement point for the battery, and what would that cost at today's prices?
- What is quoted with the subsidy already deducted, and what is the full price before it? Ask for both, separately.
- Who handles the DISCOM net-metering application, and what happens to the timeline if approval is delayed?
- Is the vendor registered on the national portal, and will the quoted panels meet the scheme's content requirements?
- For a hybrid design: has your state's regulator approved the arrangement for subsidy purposes? The central guidelines allow it; the approval is a state one.
