How to Check Your Smart Meter Balance (Display, App, SMS)
A prepaid smart meter shows its balance in three places: on the meter itself, in the DISCOM's app or portal, and through SMS alerts. Each has a different use — the display is instant, the app has the full deduction history, and SMS works without a smartphone. This guide covers all three, and shows how to read the daily deduction ledger so a falling balance never surprises you.
1. On the meter display (works without internet)
Every smart meter has a push button that cycles the display through its screens — press it repeatedly and watch the labels. The exact order varies by make, but you will typically see: current balance (₹), cumulative units (kWh), instantaneous load (kW), and voltage. The balance screen usually shows a ₹ symbol or a "BAL"/"CR" label; a negative figure means you are consuming on credit and a disconnection may be queued.
Note that the meter's balance can lag the DISCOM's system by a sync cycle — if you just recharged, the app updates first and the meter follows when it next connects.
2. In the DISCOM app or portal (the full picture)
The DISCOM's own app or consumer portal is the authoritative place: log in with your consumer/account number to see the live balance, recharge history and — most usefully — the daily deduction ledger. In Uttar Pradesh that is uppclonline.com or the UPPCL consumer app; in Bihar the Bihar Bijli Smart Meter app. For other states, use the app or portal named on your recharge receipt — our DISCOM-wise recharge pages link each official portal.
3. SMS alerts (no smartphone needed)
DISCOMs send low-balance alerts to the mobile number registered against your connection — typically at one or two thresholds before disconnection, and a confirmation after each recharge. If you are not getting them, your registered number is likely outdated: update it via the DISCOM app, portal or sub-division office. For anyone who can't use an app, these alerts are the main safety net, so fixing the number is worth the trip.
Reading the daily deduction ledger
Each day's deduction is not just "units × rate". It bundles:
- Energy charge — that day's units priced at your slab rates;
- Fixed charge — the monthly fixed charge divided across the days of the month, deducted even at zero consumption;
- FPPA and duty — the fuel surcharge and electricity duty on applicable heads;
- Arrears instalment — if old postpaid dues are being recovered, a slice per recharge or per day.
This is why the balance falls a little even on a day the house was locked. To see what your normal daily burn should be — and how long the current balance will last — use the smart meter recharge calculator, which prices your usage on your DISCOM's real tariff.
