Electricity Bill Paid but Still Showing Unpaid? Here's What to Do
If your electricity bill still shows unpaid after payment, compare three things: the transaction status, the consumer number on the receipt, and your electricity provider's payment history. A bank debit alone does not confirm that the payment reached the right electricity account. Save your proof, trace the mismatch with the payment provider and DISCOM, and check the status before attempting a second payment.
First identify which status is wrong
This guide covers regular, postpaid electricity bills. If you topped up a prepaid meter and its balance did not change, use the smart-meter recharge guide.
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Bank debited; payment app says pending or failed | Open that transaction's support option and ask the payment provider or bank to confirm its final status. |
| App says successful; no DISCOM receipt or payment entry | Match the biller and consumer number, then request a payment trace using the transaction reference. |
| DISCOM history shows the payment; an old bill PDF still shows dues | Compare the bill's issue date with the payment date and check the current account balance. |
| Receipt has another consumer number or a different biller | Report the mismatch to the payment provider and DISCOM. Ask what correction or refund is possible. |
| Payment appears; some amount remains due | Request a breakdown of current charges, previous dues, payment credits and any late fee. |
An error screen does not prove a payment failed. For example, TNPDCL tells consumers whose bank account was debited after a receipt error to avoid paying again and check the payment report while bank confirmation is processed. TNPDCL payment FAQ.
Check the payment in five steps
- Open the original transaction. Record its status, amount, date, time and transaction reference. Check whether the bank later credited a reversal.
- Match the electricity account. Compare the DISCOM name and consumer, service or CA number on the receipt with the bill. Check the selected account carefully if you pay for more than one property.
- Visit the official DISCOM portal. Open payment history and current dues. A payment-app reminder or an earlier bill is not a complete account statement.
- Compare dates and amounts. Note when the bill was issued, when you paid and when the payment was posted. Ask for an account ledger if the balance still does not make sense.
- Record the mismatch. Write one sentence describing what each system shows, and attach the matching receipt and screenshot.
Example: a bill issued on 1 September shows Rs. 2,400 due. You pay on 3 September and the DISCOM records Rs. 2,400 on 4 September. The original PDF alone cannot tell you whether anything remains payable; check current dues and subsequent charges.
For Mahavitaran, our MSEDCL WSS guide explains where to find bills and payment history.
How long should you wait?
Use the update or complaint timeline published for your payment channel and DISCOM. A pending transaction, a failed-payment reversal and a successful payment missing from the bill are different cases. Do not assume a generic promise of "24 hours" or "3-7 days" covers all three.
Ask support to confirm whether the payment succeeded, whether the biller received it, and when the account should update. Keep the reference number and promised response date. If the due date is close or you receive a disconnection notice, contact the DISCOM promptly rather than waiting for a routine update.
Where to raise the complaint
For an unresolved transaction, start in the app or bank used to pay. For a payment missing from your electricity account, also contact the DISCOM with the same evidence. NPCI's guidance allows UPI users to raise transaction complaints through their UPI app. UPI complaint guidance published by Google Pay.
| Electricity provider | Official route | What to request |
|---|---|---|
| MSEDCL / Mahavitaran, Maharashtra | The WSS complaint service or Mahavitaran app. The payment helpdesk lists [email protected]. | Trace the transaction and confirm the payment credit against your consumer number. |
| UPPCL DISCOMs, Uttar Pradesh | The consumer portal lists Bill Payment History, Bill Correction Request and service-request tracking; it also lists 1912 for complaints. | Check payment history and request correction if a paid amount is still outstanding. |
| BSES Rajdhani (BRPL), Delhi | The BRPL billing FAQ directs complaints to its website, app or [email protected]. | Request a payment trace and corrected account statement. BRPL and BSES Yamuna are separate providers. |
| TNPDCL, Tamil Nadu (often searched as TNEB / TANGEDCO) | Check the payment report described in the online-payment FAQ. For Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) transactions, the official payment notice directs complaints through the collecting bank or agent. | Confirm the receipt status and use the complaint route for the channel you paid through. |
For another provider, use DISCOM Services or the support details printed on your latest bill. Save the complaint acknowledgement before closing the portal.
Keep these documents together
- The electricity bill showing its consumer number, bill number, amount and due date.
- The payment receipt or transaction screen showing the biller, amount and status.
- The UTR, RRN or transaction ID, plus the BBPS reference if one was issued.
- The relevant bank debit and any reversal, with unrelated transactions hidden.
- A dated screenshot of the DISCOM payment history or disputed balance.
- Any earlier complaint number and support reply.
Keep transaction references readable, but do not include an OTP, UPI PIN, password or full card details. Our review team needs evidence of the payment, not access to your bank.
Complaint template for a missing payment
Replace the bracketed details and describe the status exactly as it appears. Use "pending" if the transaction is pending; do not describe a debit alone as a confirmed payment.

Please trace the payment, confirm whether it was received against this consumer number, and correct the account if the credit is missing. Please provide an updated statement explaining any balance still payable.
If a late fee arose from a payment-posting error, please review and reverse it where applicable. [If relevant: I have also received the attached disconnection notice; please review it urgently and confirm what action is required while the payment is traced.]

What about arrears, late fees or a disconnection notice?
A paid amount can still require a billing correction. MSEDCL's consumer FAQ specifically tells consumers to report arrears shown despite payment to the concerned office.
Ask for the ledger showing the payment date, credit and remaining charges. Identify the exact late fee you dispute and request a review with proof of when you paid. A waiver or refund depends on the facts and applicable rules; it is not automatic.
If a notice threatens disconnection, send the payment evidence and notice to the DISCOM immediately, obtain an acknowledgement, and ask for written confirmation of the next steps. Do not assume a pending complaint by itself pauses collection or disconnection. Any undisputed current charges still need attention.
If the payment remains unresolved
Follow up against the original complaint number. Ask the payment provider for the transaction outcome, and the DISCOM for its account entry or reason for refusing correction. If they give conflicting answers, send each party the other's written response.
For an unresolved billing grievance, follow your state's escalation procedure. BRPL publishes its consumer grievance process; our electricity complaint guide explains the DISCOM, Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum and Electricity Ombudsman stages. A bank or payment-provider dispute follows that provider's own grievance process.
