What Charging an EV Really Costs in India: Home Socket vs Public Fast Charger

Charging an EV at home costs a fraction of what petrol does — but the number on EV brochures is usually wrong in both directions. It ignores charging losses (you pay for more units than the battery holds) and assumes a flat tariff, when home charging actually lands on your top domestic slab. This guide walks the honest maths for home 15A charging, wallbox charging and public DC fast charging — and shows exactly where each rupee goes.

The formula — with the part brochures skip

Cost of a full charge = battery size (kWh) × your per-unit rate × ~1.1. That last factor is charging loss: AC chargers waste roughly 8–12% as heat between the wall socket and the battery, and your meter bills the wall side. A 40 kWh car battery therefore draws about 44 units from the meter, not 40.

Here is a full home charge for common Indian EVs, costed honestly — battery drawn from the meter (with ~10% charging loss) at a ₹7/unit slab, and per-km against a conservative real-world range rather than the ARAI claim:

Home charging: billed at your top slab, not the average

Home EV charging goes through your ordinary domestic meter, so the units are priced by your DISCOM's slab ladder — and because they add on top of your household consumption, they land in the highest slab you touch. A household already in the top slab pays the top-slab rate for every EV unit, which can differ noticeably from the "average rate" the showroom quoted. Find your ladder on our state tariff pages.

Hardware matters less than people think: a regular 15A socket (~3.3 kW) fills a big car battery overnight (10–14 hours) and a scooter in 1–2 hours. A 7.2 kW AC wallbox roughly halves car charging time, but usually requires a sanctioned-load increase from your DISCOM — drawing a wallbox on a 2 kW sanctioned load invites excess-demand penalties. One habit worth building: for daily use most owners charge to about 80%, not 100% — it protects long-term battery health and a full charge is rarely needed for a day's driving. Public charging: convenience priced at 2–3× home rates

Public networks (Tata Power EZ Charge, Statiq, Zeon, Jio-bp and others) pay commercial tariffs, add their margin and GST, and typically land between ₹15 and ₹25 per unit — AC posts at the lower end, DC fast chargers at the upper end. The electricity is identical; you are paying for speed and location.

The practical rule: home for daily charging, DC only on highways. Routine DC fast charging both triples your per-km cost and ages the battery faster.

EV vs petrol vs diesel: the monthly bill

Per-km numbers are abstract; the monthly bill isn't. Here is the same mid-size car driven 1,000 km a month, as petrol, diesel, and an EV charged two ways:

Four ways to cut the cost further

  1. Charge at night on a ToD meter. Several states give off-peak Time-of-Day rebates in the late-night window. A charger timer moves virtually all EV units into the discount. How ToD windows work: ToD billing explained.
  2. Check for a dedicated EV tariff. Some states publish a separate LT EV-charging category cheaper than the top domestic slab — worth a separate meter if you drive a lot.
