How to Read Your MSEDCL (Mahavitaran) Electricity Bill
MSEDCL (Mahavitaran) serves nearly all of Maharashtra outside Mumbai city — Mumbai itself is split between Adani Electricity, BEST and Tata Power. Maharashtra bills carry more separate charge lines than most states, and one of India's steepest electricity duties, so the total often surprises people who moved from elsewhere.
1. Energy charge — LT-1 slabs that climb steeply
Residential (LT-1) consumption is priced slab-wise with slab boundaries at 100, 300 and 500 units — and the jump between the first and last slab is roughly threefold, one of the steepest in India. That is why a heavy-AC month hurts disproportionately. Current rates are on the MSEDCL tariff page.
2. Fixed charge — banded by sanctioned load
MSEDCL's fixed charge is tiered by load band (up to 1 kW, 1–2 kW, 2–5 kW, 5–10 kW, above 10 kW), so crossing a band boundary changes the monthly amount in a step. 3. The pass-through lines: FAC and wheeling
- FAC (Fuel Adjustment Charge): Maharashtra's fuel surcharge, a ₹/unit amount revised periodically. See how fuel surcharges are calculated.
- Wheeling charge: a separate ₹/unit line for using the distribution network — MSEDCL prints it separately from the energy charge, which is unusual and makes the per-unit rate look lower than the effective rate.
4. Electricity duty — the 16% line
